Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

This month we have a steamy issue—and we’re not just talking about heat! But let’s get serious first. Last month we discussed the growing problem of South Asian children getting harassed and attacked in our schools. This month, our resident psychiatrist delves further into the issue and discusses how to help your child resist bullies and develop a healthy identity.

Unfortunately, prejudice and hate remains an issue for many families, especially Muslim ones. First-time author Kavitha Rajagopalan explores what it means to be a Muslim in the “West” in her new book, Muslims of Metropolis: The Stories of Three Immigrant Families in the West. Rajagopalan allows readers to immerse themselves in the lives of her characters, offering a first-hand look at the struggles of a Palestinian family in London, a Kurdish family in Berlin and a Bangladeshi family in New York. This month we meet Rajagopalan and learn how her book came about.

We received enormous feedback on part one of our series on how to start a business. This month we bring you numero deux of our twofer with advice on how to get started.

“Let’s talk about sex, baby. Let’s talk about you and me.” This month we do more than just sing the old Salt-n-Pepa song. We have a candid discussion about ABCDs’ attitudes toward premarital sex.

Going on vacation and can’t bring yourself to leave the Blackberry and laptop at home? When did we become such workaholics? This month, we show you how to “just be.” Read our life coach’s advice on how to just let go and leave the work behind. Personally, I think I may need to take some of her advice!

Our Love and Sex expert also dishes out advice. This month, she discusses balancing a relationship with family and dealing with a significant other who has a wandering eye.

Our Desi Diva lets you in on how to stay looking cool despite the summer heat.

Have you ever noticed that Desi moms seem to have the same remedy for stomach ailments? This month we share their recipes. Check out our recipes for khichri and ginger tea.

And finally, we experience one writer’s observation of a family in India. This piece will transport you to this family’s home and allow you to share their morning rituals.

Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
