Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

When I was younger, I was terrified of any changes in my life. Perhaps that’s what happens when you live in the same home from kindergarten to high school! Going away to college was a huge adjustment for me, and all moves and major life events always take me additional time to sort through. This month, we decided to make ABCDlady’s issue about change and new beginnings.

First, we bring you activist Valarie Kaur. If the name sounds familiar to you, it should—we featured her four years ago after she was arrested for attempting to document police abuse at the Republican National Convention. This young lady is continuing to inspire change around her. Just last year, she released a five-year-in-the-making, post-9/11 documentary, Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath. Since then, Kaur has taken her show on the road, going from venue to venue across the country to educate Americans about diversity. This month, we meet Kaur and get to know her and her entire family!

For those trying to turn over a new leaf and lose a few pounds, the next two articles are must-reads. First, we discuss South Asian cuisine: the foods you can continue to enjoy and the items you should avoid. Next, we give you some exercise alternatives to spice up your workout. I thought I knew everything there was to know about workouts, but this article even has me adding items to my to-do list. Definitely check it out if you’re serious about decreasing your jeans size.

Speaking of jeans, our Desi Diva lets you in on the summer items you can continue to wear in the fall when you are not ready to break out your winter wardrobe. She also tells you about some must-have bags to always keep you looking your best.

New to South Asian cooking? Our cuisine expert provides South Asian recipes with familiar ingredients that you can find at any grocery store.

This month, we also encounter a few people experiencing change on a large scale. One of our writers discusses how she got over her fear of commitment and purchased her very own home. Our Parenting expert discusses what you need to know after learning your child has a disability. And our Love and Sex expert meets two Desis who want more emotional intimacy with their partners.

And in other news, ABCDlady was featured in NPR's Magazine Mavens segment last month. Check out our interview!

Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
